Five-A-Day Fruit And Veg

The average person in the UK eats less than 3 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, instead of the recommended 5. You can download a handy chart on what qualifies as a portion here.

The Times has a top 8 list of "pick your own fruit" farms.

For August, greengages, plums, early damsons, and blackberries are coming into season. Apricots, gooseberries, blueberries, cherries, loganberries, rasberries, peaches, and redcurrants are still in season.

So where can we get hold of any of these things if we want to avoid supermarkets? OK I know I can get blackberries from Whitley Common and there's a farmers' market in Coventry but that's on a Thursday and only once a month. Is there somewhere in Coventry that I can conveniently get locally grown fruit and veg?

My local greengrocers in Earlsdon has three varieties of apple on sale at present, only one of them being British! There's no quick fix. Andy Littlewood, from the council, has been talking about collecting fruit that has fallen off trees. If we only buy fruit that is seasonal and British, vendors will be forced to start providing local options.
